In this collection of painterly photographs I captured moments in the life of beach goers as mirrored in the wet sand at the edge of and in shallow water. In this way, these refracted images are in fact records of traces of experience rather than direct documentations. My studio is at the threshold of the foreshore where both forms and identities are morphed and suspended. Bodies undress as they enter the water, visitors arrive seeking ‘time-out’ and children play and explore the water’s edge with an uninhibited freedom increasingly rare in everyones’ lives today. The scenes are recognizable and warmly familiar, yet the dissolution and semi-abstraction of the figures makes them flicker like mirages; the product of a dream or perhaps some heat-induced fanciful imagining.
